The purpose of using garden rain chains in the garden is mainly decorative and less functional. The only real use of a rain chain is to transport rain water in a bigger storage container for later use: some people water their plants with rain water as it is supposed to have more minerals.
These garden accessories were initially designed in Japan and as a pattern are either a series of metal cups, chained together with a hole in the bottom of each, or chain links that span vertically, which can successfully replace a downspout.
The Japanese rain chain is mainly made of copper or aluminum and an entire system can consist in leaders, links, cups, extensions, barrels, basins and other copper accessories.
So, if you ever decide to wow your guests with more than a delicious lemonade served in the middle of your perfectly grown plants, install some rain chains and hope for a fast summer rain that will make your day and give photographers the opportunity of capturing waterfalls in the city.

Great post. I know this is not quite on topic, but I just wanted to add that the site theme here is pretty cool. Is there a name or something? I do not know where to look.
